Unhappy Transmission Or TC Whine?

I have a 1998 Dodge ram 1500 with 199,000 miles on it with a 318. Recently the other day while driving I noticed my truck making a whining kind of sound, it sounded like it had a supercharger on it, so I decided to look into it more, it wasn't coming from any of the pulleys and wasn't a belt either (Gator back belt). I put it in N and checked the trans fluid and it was up to level and didn't smell burnt. So to see where it was exactly coming from I put on the parking brake, and threw it into drive with my foot on the brake and gave it some gas, it would whine like it was coming from the transmission, While driving on pavement it would whine between 1000 - 2500 RPM, It seems to shift alright, but doesn't shift like it did before this whine happened. It's gotten even louder with in 2 days, I'm lost from here, I can't figure out if it's a bad transmission pump or Torque Converter or even a clogged trans filter. It has the kind of whine that a old HD transmission would have. Any advice would be very much appreciated, Thanks, Alec.

i can only say a little about a clogged filter. with a clogged filter in the cold rev will be slow coming in. the reason is rev turns the pressure up to about 300 psi. requiring more fulid. the 300 psi is inside the trany , only. the cooler lines run as high as 90-100 psi. at the highest limit of carb fuel hose. but some helpful hints. if needed to use hose use high pressure hose only. if you need to ad tubing only use steel tubing. the chrysler trans should use 3/8 steel tubing. the in fluid in should be the fitting on the rear left, but double check. i have found a very good external filter.

man o man i about forgot yes its a cut & past sorry. __________________
after you clean the trans. add this to your*chrysler*trans. an external fluid filter
1. go to auto-zone. get 2210, its called a power steering filter, but it is for transs to. it is for 3/8 tubing. by (magna-fine) be sure to use high pressure hose. Reff:http://www.magnafilter.com
2. for other sizes wix 58964 5/16 tube size

Doesn't seem to be the power steering pump. I can turn the wheel back and forth and it's quite. Thanks for your input. I appreciate it.

If you removed the fan belt and noise is gone, then the problem is belt driven. If the noise is still there, then replace the front pump and torque converter. And while you have the pump out, remove and inspect the clutches and bands.
