Default Bumper removal and airbag

I finished installing my body lift yesterday and I went to the shop to have the bumper un-torqued to install the new bumper brackets and the mechanic said he would un-torque them but would not remove the bumper because of the airbag sensor or something like that? The cord that is mounted on one of the bumper support frames located on the passenger side of the vehicle. The mechanic said if I tried to uninstall the bumper I would trip the air bag is this true? He also told me not to pull the fuse cause that was trouble waiting to happen so he gave me a body shop number and said to refer him. Is he just trying to get a referral? Or is it really possible to trip the airbag taking the bumper off? Thanks

If you are paranoid.... disconnect the battery. Wait five minutes. unplug the connector for the sensor, then remove the bumper. (or, just leave the sensor disconnected, and hook the battery back up.)

I have no idea where the airbag trigger is, what does the fsm state to do?

From the 2001 page 1478 fsm on bumper removal

FRONT BUMPER
REMOVAL

(1) Support front bumper on a suitable lifting
device.

(2) Remove bolts attaching front bumper outer
bracket to frame rail (Fig. 6).

(3) Remove nuts and stud plates attaching front
bumper to end of frame rail.

(4) Disengage wire connectors from fog lamps, if
equipped.

(5) Separate front bumper from vehicle

Just unhook the battery and you will be fine. My airbag sensors are on top of the inner fenders behind the headlights.

ok ill unhook the battery wait 5 minutes unplug the sensor and I should be good to go. I guess the air bag sensors on these trucks varies im definitely going to move mine. I can already see me off-roading and the air bag randomly popping out or some nonsense like that. Im surprised it hasn't already. Long time ago me and my friend were working on the bumper of a Pontiac when the air bag deployed and grazed me on the arm. Dust was everywhere and that air bag was hot so I just wanted to make sure that didn't happen again. Thanks

That would not be wise. Leave it where it is currently located.

The sensor is an accelerometer. It looks for RAPID deceleration at speeds over 25MPH. I don't think it would be possible to trigger it while out trail riding, without driving over a cliff. It is VERY picky about the direction of acceleration as well. (hitting a brick wall and coming to an immediate stop is also considered 'acceleration', it just has a negative value. )
