LOTS of good advice here on this thread.

Aluminum plate plenum fix.
Fel-pro gaskets.
Old bolts with heads cut off as guide pins.
Hit the old intake bolts with PB Blaster (or penetrating oil of your choice) for a few days before attempting to remove.
Upgrade timing chain to double roller set.
(If you get the chain with +4 or -4 timing marks, keep it stock +0)
Replace water pump at same time.
DO NOT TOUCH THE DIZZY.
PCV valve from the dealership (not aftermarket)


I rounded mine out with a new belt and hoses- figured the rubber was 12 years old and who wants to use a 12 year old rubber?

Btw, the socket for the harmonic balancer bolt on my 01 was 1 1/4 inch. Hope you have an impact driver.

yea its sure time for my water pump (kinda been puttin it off :-) ..iv checked out some reviews & videos about removing harmonic balancer bolt & it looks like a nightmare unless u have expensive tools just layin around, thats the part that has me wonderin aroung wtf is my best route to go >getting overwelmed with all this, im pretty much tearing engine down now lol (im real good with my hands but not a mechanic lol -half tempted to pull the engine to do all this (idk if thats save me problems or make more for me

what all 'unexpected tools/problems' am i lookin @ for water pump & changing timing? >>love this forum, its saved me soo many headaches, tought me about ALLOT, has great resources & community!!!

Biggest hassle of the process, in my opinion, is removal of the fan.

Need a spanner tool of sorts or something to stick in the hole and catch on the block to keep it from turning. I used a flathead screw driver bent into an "L".

Other than that basic hand tools will do ya. I'd replace the little bypass hose while you're there.

The Cloyes Double Roller from Rockauto is around $40 + shipping, there is a discount thread in the Gen. Discussion section as well. Replacement is also straightforward.

Not sure if the '99 needs a threaded puller, like a steering wheel puller, or a 3 jaw puller like my '01...

yea i saw there was a couple lil wrenches you can borrow from parts store or something to keep pump in place to remove fan bolt.. i also saw a couple folks doing like u mentioned with a straightbar or screwdriver. right now what has me second guessing is getting that harmonic balancer bolt and how to get it off & back on (no experience with all this.. yet )

Interesting tools you will need:

Something to hold the water pump pulley while removing the fan. (I used a chain wrench. But, I happen to own one.)

Big socket for balancer bolt. (I have one of these too, but, I have air tools as well. Just put it on there, use a ratchet, and smack the ratchet with a hammer a couple times to break the bolt loose, and then it will come right out.)

Balancer puller. Don't know if yours has the bolt-on pulley or not... but, you need some variety of puller to get it off in one piece. Do NOT use a jaw puller on the outer ring. You will trash the balancer.

Gasket scraper. (razor blade, razor knife, putty knife, whatever.)

The rest is just basic hand tools.

Make sure you have at LEAST three days to do this job. Last one I did, with two of us workin' at it, it was 15 hours, start to finish. We only had one broken bolt to deal with, and it wasn't that bad to get out.

Basic set of sockets/ratchet, set of wrenches, some 3 and 6 inch extensions, will get you far on the water pump...

1 1/4 socket and impact driver for the harmonic balancer... Or one hell of a breaker bar. (I got a socket and 3/4 drive craftsman ratchet for $10 at my local pawn shop)

I rented from my local auto parts store a harmonic balancer puller for free.

You'll also need a fan clutch removal tool... I think it's a 36mm, but could be wrong. Also need some sort of way to keep the water pump from spinning when you try to remove it. I rigged up a spanner with some angle iron and bolts, others have been able to do the job with a strap around the pulley (like an adjustable oil filter wrench)

Torque wrench in *inch pounds* for the intake manifold when you do the plenum. (And then retorque after a week... Retorque again after a week... Retorque again for good.)

My timing set was a b***h to get lined up just right. Only took me two hours in -10 degree temps... Although maybe I just couldn't feel my fingers.
