Transmission no go after getting hot
I was having problems with my 95 Ram not shifting correctly and then one day it would not move at all, It also was making a loud whistling noise. I had the truck towed back to my house. A few days later I tried truck and all gears where working but still heard the whistling sound. I heard this could be from a clogged filter. So I dropped the pan and changed the filter and what ever fluid I lost with ATF +4. Before this I was using DEX IIII.
The fluid in the pan was a nice pink and the bottom of pan was clean except around the magnet, which was covered in a silvery sludge, but not to bad. I put everything back together and checked fluid level while in neutral.
Took for a test drive, at first everything seamed fine but soon it wasn't shifting right. A couple of times when I would slow down the engine would almost stall. Also when I took off from a stop it felt like it was still in 3rd gear so I manually shifted from 1st to 2nd then to drive from the shift column. It would run fine doing this but after driving for a while, I lost all forward and reverse gears. i let it sit for about 10 minutes then I had forward gears. I drove for about 4 blocks then lost all gears again. I let it sit for another 10 minutes then I had forward gears again. Luckily I was only about 8 blocks from home.
Does this sound like I have a blockage somewhere else, or is my transmission just toast. I find it weird that it works if I let it sit for awhile.
This is a 95 with a 46RH so gears 1-3 are controlled via hydraulics so I don't think it would be a solenoid but I could be wrong.
One more thing, I am pretty sure the check valve by the cooler was removed from previous owner, because I have always had to put gear shifter in neutral in the morning to allow for torque converter to fill up.

I didn't adjust the bands as I wasn't exactly sure how to do it. I may just call it quits for this truck. It is pretty rusty and probably not worth a rebuilt tranny. Was hopping it might be a simple fix and could get me by a little while longer. Any way thanks for all your input.
