I dunno, around here you can tell when winter blend is used about october they switch, not even when it's real cold yet. My truck will go down 10-14% and so will the bike. That said, cold air is denser, cold fluid is more viscous and thus all of the above contribute to poorer fuel mileage. Expect a loss of 20% of your mileage in the winter time, that's about par for the course for me. I lose it to fluid temps, air temps, very hard km2's and slipping and use of 4x4. Yep.
OP, I agree on one thing, a compression test is warranted, do you have any computer codes?
Don't immediately expect the engine to be worn out, you could be talking about guides, stem seals, a bad exhaust seat or even a bad PCV valve...in fact if you've never changed it...do that now just for the sake of it since they are dirt cheap. Even if it still rattles, who cares it could stick when it's cold too or even hot...

I have gotten a CEL many times. I turn the truck off to check the code(s) and the light no longer is on. I've tried checking using the key on-off method and nothing. I replaced the PCV valve and cleaned the crankcase breather. It uses 1-2 quarts between 3,000 miles. If I race around it uses more, but I almost always never go above 2,300 RPM.
Oh right I forgot your truck's a 95. I'm pretty sure you can get a code reader for ob1 and I thought the on-off ignition trick only worked for obII?
