It's normal for the light to go off and stay off when you turn the key off, but the codes are stored. The scanner connection is hanging from the wiring harness between the PCM and AC drier.

I thought that lose connector was for the code reader! Just got to buy one now. Unfortunately no CEL since last reset.

Yep, that's what I mean't. LOL

Might be able to find an auto parts store that'll do it for you. I only tried once at one store and was told they only do OBDII, said to heck with it and just use the key.

When you turn the key on off three times on-off-on-off-on the check engine light will BLINK the each trouble code that is tripped one at a time.

like 33 would be blink/blink/blink pause blink/blink/blink a long pause is the start of the next code, the last code is 55 and thats end of messages. see what comes up and get back to us. This is probably what you've seen already just didn't know it was giving you codes.

you must have what i lovingly refer to as an obd 1.5... some toyotas were like that in the 90s...they suck. Anyways, there SHOULD be an obd2 port somewhere on the truck, either under the kick panel or tucked into the wiring harness...that's not a certain thing but if it doesnt react to the key trick by blinking the light then it's definitely an obd2 computer, which if you pop the hood and see a JTEC+ controller (pictures available on google images) then it is a obd2 computer. Either way, find the port, plug in a standard scan tool, set the tool if necessary to "global" and it will eventually puke out the stored codes...the alternative is a DRB2 scan tool or the adapter for a drb3...available at most good private shops.

I can't find an OBD2 port. There is a similar connector under the hood which is probably for OBD1. Maybe the computer is glitching or something. It used to give me problems starting until I cleaned the corrosion that was on the connector in the computer. I don't remember correctly and might be wrong but I think I haven't gotten a code since then (3 months ago) but time will tell if I get another CEL

I tried again to retrieve codes, even code 55, and the light just won't blink. With the key in the OFF position I do this: ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON. From there the oil pressure light stays on as it should and the CEL light stays on for a couple seconds and then turns off.

Finally found the problem...I wasn't waiting long enough after cycling the key...So I got codes. 12, 37, 32, 55 in that order. My EGR disconnected explains 32, but 37 is weird, it says TCC solenoid CKT or park neutral switch failure. Where do I start looking for the problem to code 37

TCC not engaging would give you worse gas mileage. Check the connector on the driver side of the trans, make sure it is clean, and tight.

If your truck will start in both park, and neutral, that switch is good. Might be an issue at the pcm, but, you said you cleaned terminals there already. Might wanna check it again.

Your system should be OBDI. Rectangular connector hidden behind the knee panel, right by your right knee.
