Default 01 ram load rear end noise

I have a 2001 dodge ram 1500 4X4, on the way to work I started getting a loud noise in the rear end. I jacked up the truck to run it and see where the noise was coming from,,,seems to be in the front of the punkin where the shafe connects. there is no play in the shaft in the driveshaft. but the noise it loud...any idea what it could be ? I took the plate off of the punkin and drained all the oil,,there where a few small piece of metal at the bottom,,looks like it was maybe a 4 inch round wash type piece, but wasn't all there,,,just some of it.....any help would be great
