Default NV4500 Transmission Fluid

Hi all. I want to change the fluid in my 01 Ram 2500, and the auto parts store guy sold me Pennzoil Synchromesh. The bottle says it's compatible with yellow metals but what worries me is that it DOESN'T say it's GL-4. Is this stuff safe to use in the NV4500? The last thing I want is a tranny rebuild on my hands.

If this stuff is no good, what can I use? Does Amsoil, Royal Purple, or any other manufacturer make a fluid compatible with the NV4500?

PS I plan on doing the transfer case fluid as well. He gave me Castrol ATF+4 for that. The service manual says that's all good.

From what I've found, you need Castrol Syntorque 75w-90 oil

And Wiki lists the following as the ONLY approved fluids:

75W-90 Castrol Syntorque Synthetic
Mopar Synthetic Manual Transmission Lubricant Mopar P/N 4874459 (Material Specification 9070)[2]
GM Goodwrench® Synthetic Manual Transmission Fluid (GM Part No. U.S. 12346190, in Canada 10953477)[

You might need to stop by a dealership...

Yeah I saw the wiki page. I find it kinda difficult to believe that another company wouldn't have come up with an alternative though. If there's another option, I'm sure someone on this forum woulda found it.

Another thing I'm sure of... fluid from the dealer is gonna be expensive.

There are some members here with the same transmission, they might be able to offer places that sell it cheaper.

I believe the stuff I got was 75W-90 Castrol Syntorque Synthetic. I just went to my local Carquest and had them look it up (oil numbers were on the side of the tranny, factory sticker), then we cross referenced info and came up with that. It was special order, and cost about $9 a quart, but is well worth it. Tranny shifts smooth as butter with it.

I will verify what I have when I get home Saturday.

Hell I paid about that much for the Pennzoil Synchromesh. If I can find the Castrol Syntorque for a similar price I'll be friggin' tickled.

So Wombat Ranger answered me via PM. I'm posting the answer for anyone that uses the search function in the future looking for this info.

"Answer to your question is you only have 2 safe options. Castrol Syntorque like you said, or Amsoil API GL-4. It is designed specifically for the NV4500 and while it is not cheap at about $15/qt, it is cheaper than the castrol stuff."

http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-produc...ont%2fmtg.aspx

Thanks for the help guys.

Finally got home this afternoon. Looking around and can't find my extra bottle of oil. I did however find the receipt for it. It just says 75-90 syn qrt, $11.45. The price is so low because my employer has a high-volume discount. Makes it nice buying parts.

For ****s I called a Dodge dealer today. Guy told me they don't carry it anymore, but when they did it was like $25 per quart.
