Default 96 RAM 1500 4x4 actuator

Hey folks,
I'm new to the Dodge Forum and glad to be here.
I need some help/advise.
I recently got a 96 Ram 1500 that I plan to use as a work truck. In my line of work the 4x4 is somewhat a necessity. I couldn't for the life of me get it to work. Until ...
I noticed that to get the 4x4 to engage, I have to pull off the actuator and reverse it. When I do that the 4x4 light comes on and then it works.
Any idea why this is ?

Thanks in advance.
