Default truck using way too much gas

so it is getting cold now it was about -25ish and i have noticed that my truck will used about half a tank a day. i drive 10-15 min to work and it sits all day than back. also if i leave it running to warm up it will idle real rough and stall. i have not checked for a fuel leak yet it is way too cold but is there anything eles that would be causing this?

i have a 1998 Dodge 1500 5.9 V8 360

THANKS

Welcome to DF!

have a read of the plenum thread stickied at the top of this forum. That may be a least a part of your problem.

You shouldn't burn that much gas. I travel that same distance to work in the same temperature and a tank lasts a week or more. Honestly, I am assuming you have a fuel leak. As for the stall/hesitation.. When was last tune up? Could be quite a few things. Some that come to mind right away are Plenum, IAC, clogged cat, bad 02 sensor, maybe MAP?

I have the same problem in my 08 dodge ram. When the weather gets cold, down in the low 20`s my gas mileage will drop from 18 mpg down to the low 14 mpg range. Once the weather warms up my gas mileage goes back up.

There are no problems with my truck, it runs perfect. It has something to do with the cold weather. I was kind of wondering if a grill cover would help ?.

Grill cover won't help because it's the intake air temperature being low that's burning the fuel. Routing your intake to suck in air from the engine bay might though.

And lets not forget the effects of winter blend gasoline either.

Cheap butane doesn't burn well but they fill the gas with it because it's stable in the cold.

You should definitely check out the plenum thread and give it a check, along with pre-cat O2 sensor and the catalytic converter....

I could see a fuel leak, I have a 1996 dodge neon. I would put in a half a tank, drive 20 minutes to work 10 backroads stop/go and then 10 highway and i would be down to a 1/4.... it ran ruff and wouldnt idle. i had a pin hole leak in my fuel line.
