I am thinking that i will be throwing a new engine in my truck sometime when the weather gets warmer.


My main question is where can I get a short block 318 to replace my current motor?

 

Short block doesn't come with heads. The one part on these motors that REALLY needs replaced on a rebuild.

many places offer them though, including your local parts stores.

 

well i have terrible compression numbers on my motor so i figured i should replace the bottom end as well.

 

Pick up a long block, (comes with heads) or, yank yours, rebuild it, and replace the heads. (actually a better option, as 99% of rebuilds come with reman heads, which still have the same weaknesses as the factory fellers.... as they started out life that way.) or, pick up a rebuildable core, rebuild that, and then just swap motors. That way, while the rebuild is going on, you can still drive the truck.

may wanna do a cylinder leakdown test, and see just where your problems are. combine that with a dry/wet compression test, and it gives you a really good idea of just where the major problems are.

 

Is there a good place to pickup a rebuildable core?

 

Junkyard, craigslist, local classified ads, etc.

I seem to have a spare 360 I am not going to use......
