Default 1995 5.2 upgrade tips to 5.9

** new member **

I have 1995 truck and it has 251K miles on it. I just picked it up cheap and thinking about chances of dropping a 5.9 into her. I know the '95 has the old OBD system. want to try stay with it cause of inspection issues. will a '95 5.9 drop in and bolt up or do I need some mods done? or just get another 5.2 and leave well enough alone?

It will bolt right up. I believe the only difference is the flexplate. The 5.9 should have a weighted flexplate, as its an externally balanced motor. Do you already have a complete '95 5.9 motor to swap into your truck?

It will bolt-up to the existing trans, however, there may be some additional items that are different from the 5.2. The oil pan may be different and the harmonic balancer, too. Others will likely chime in to offer their thoughts.

Oil pan will be exactly the same. Harmonic balancer is most certainly different, but, if you get a longblock, it should come with it.

Being as yours is a 95 though, I think the flexplate, and/or torque converter will have to change. That is something I would investigate before installing anything. If the engines are the same price....... I would opt for the larger cubes. If they do emissions testing, you may want to source a PCM for the 5.9 as well.
