Default anyone tried full synt. oil?

it is time for my 50th oil change. I have always used Castrol GTX 10W -30... but I see where some people are getting better performance and things from oil like mobile one or that purple stuff... has anyone tried both? do I stick with my old standby or would I be better off going with the higer grade stuff?

I switched to synthetic in both my Dakotas and got some better performance. I noticed my truck wasnt running as hot as well as I wasnt losing as much oil as I was previously. I think it all depends more on the way you maintain your truck then on just the oil itself.

I'd recommend it. Mobil 1 and Valvoline Full Synthetic are the only 2 brands I'd ever recommend. Never used the purple stuff but I've heard decent stuff about it.

I switched to Mobil 1 Syn at 50,000 (about 10,000 miles ago). I have done too many other mods in that same time to really say for sure if it made any difference.

)Synthetic does help. Mobil 1 and Valvoline are what I pick up as well (whatever is cheaper at the moment)

Well I use the 5W-30 in the vette (that's what they recommended) and I was wondering if it was worth the extra money to put it in the truck too... I'm thinking I may give it a shot...

Oil is a lubricant it is not a miracle tonic. The difference between synth and regular over 3000 miles is usually negligible.

That said synth is better in some applications than regular. If you have been using regular and do not plan to change your driving habits (ie start racing your turck against your vet) than regular is fine. Of course if your serious about your vehicle having 150,000 miles some of the synth oils have additives that (over time) build up some extra protections for high milage vehicles. Just be sure if you do switch to synth to give it a couple of changes (to build up the helpful additives) before you switch back.

I agree syn. is not a miricale elixr. that said the properties of synthetic oil are superior to that of organic oil. I can get in a lubricate and cleanm places that dino oil can not. A better lubricated engine is going to run smoother and cooler simply because the less friction the less the heat.

I use Mobil 1 Extended Performance Full Synthetic 10w-30, the truck seems to run smoother and quieter.
