Default Houston, we have a problem..! RE46 overdrive.

ok..
What I have is a '01 dodge 318 engine and an '01 RE46 transmission that I have transplanted into my '99 Jeep wrangler. Trouble is my speedo and overdrive aren't working. Well.. the OD did work twice recently while on the interstate at random times. So I took it to a local tranny shop here and let them spend a couple of hours troubleshooting it. Here is what they said:

check for speedo and od innop. found codes PO500- no VSS signal and 3 other oxygen sensor codes
(because they weren't plugged in)
PO031 B1B1 oxygen sensor shorted to voltage
P0031 B1S1 oxygen heater sensor circuit
P0138 B1B2 oxygen heater sensor shorted to voltage
verified power, ground, continuity through signal wire to PCM - Ok.
checked for signal from speed sensor - none
found speedometer gear missing from housing.
installed speedometer gear - no signal from sensor is present
verified signal to PCM - signal present.
checked PCM for confirmation of signal using scan tool - none found
signal from Jeep is not compatible with dodge PCM in vehicle.

Recommend electrical specialist
PCM reads:
2001 dodge Ram 1500 st 5.9l
Vin ....

I was told that the OD wasn't working (but IT HAS) because it's looking for the speedo.. HELP please.. Don't make me take it to the dealer..!

Does the shaft in the xcase have the teeth on it to drive the speedo gear, it might not as that stopped in 98. Did you set the Vss in the right spot to make it have contact with the shaft in the xcase?

Page 1774 in the 96 FSM will explain what I am talking about for meshing the speedo gear with the shaft.

Does the Jeep actually even have a sensor on the t-case? Or does it get vehicle speed info from the same place dodge trucks of that year do, which is off the rear wheel speed sensor??

Well.. the transfer case is an AtlasII and yes it does have gears. No clue on setting the VSS. The tranny shop did the work. I would think it was installed right but, I can ask on Monday and see if he remembers..?

Thanx..

I'm clueless where the sensor is located.. but it's an aftermarket Tcase and I never saw one attached to it.. and seeing as how the differentials are not factory.. That could be the missing link to this. Good point. I live next door to a good size wrecking yard.. so perhaps I'll go do some digging around tomorrow. Stay tuned..

I had a brain fart, excuse me. Speed sensor on the rear diff..? Time to back things up a bit.. The Overdrive HAS worked twice, so it's not looking for a speed sensor.. Seems like a bad electrical connection instead. Time to trace all connections from the PCM to the tranny.
