Broken transfer case chain?

Broken transfer case chain?
Hello all,
Recently had my 4wd go out and put a posilok system in. Now occasionally my transfer case makes a grinding sound and i noticed last night in all this snow that only my back wheels were spinning. Grinding isnt regular so im wondering if maybe the chain broke and is only hitting the teeth every once in a while or if it slipped off or teeth are broken or what? Any input would be great.

like heyou said check the snap ring, its common to break, which will in time ruin a lot of parts inside your tcase. I just went through the same thing. put in a posi lok and a transfer case saver and replaced a few parts inside my transfer case.
Theyre actually really simple to work on, Ive never worked on a transfer case before and it was all pretty straight forward.
I followed this http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/94...ld-w-pics.html
Although its for a np241 if you have a 1500 youll have a 231 transfer case, but its pretty much the same thing

Maybe a little bit. Basically, it's four bolts at the rear of the driveshaft, pry it out of the yoke, and then pull it straight back out of the t-case. Block the rear wheels, and have trans in neutral, makes life a little easier.
Only three or four bolts holding the tail housing on. It might be stuck on there pretty good though, so, careful not to break it. It IS only aluminum.
With that out of the way, you should see the snap ring right up against the output shaft bearing. If it ain't there, well, that's one problem.

Yeah im thinking about going out to a buddies with a lift and see if i can lift from the frame to drop the axle a bit and maybe put more of an angle on the driveshaft to get more workin room. And correct me if im wrong its a 10mm bolt? Im thinkin it is seeing as how thats the only wrench that i cannot find. 😒😠
