Default steering wheel metal scraping noise?

My 99 ram has a metal to metal scraping noise in the steering column and needless to say is very irritating, has anyone had a similar issue and how did you fix it. I'm in the process of taking apart and stiil see nothing to warrant the noise. A mechanic who changes my oil says he would dig into it for me, but I'd rather try to fix it myself, if feasible. Mike

Possibly the clock spring is getting ready to give up the ghost. Can you isolate just where the noise is coming from?

Be careful with the airbags. Disconnect the battery, and wait ten minutes before doing much, if anything, to the column.

Where does it feel like its coming from? Upper column, inside the cab, end of the column. I know it's hard to tell.

I'd check where the column attaches to the gear box

Does it have a "knock" at all

Sometimes I can feel it if i pull back on column shifter(automatic) while turning the wheel, so i'm thinking its close to the linkage in column area.
