Default Tranny problem

Hi everyone I just bought a 99 4x4 1500 sport has the 5.9 in it but the tranny is bad . It will not catch in drive or reverse . my question is does it most likely need a full rebuild I am assuming it does since it just hit 140k miles or could it be someting else. Also i have a 96 1500 4x4 with a 5.9 but I need to rebuild the motor in it . Will the tranny from the 96 work in the 99? thanks.

Trans from the 96 will bolt right in, and hook right up. Should work just find. Use the transfer case from the 99.

Or, you could drop the pan on the current trans, and see what you find.

Thanks thats what I was thinking then kinda got to thinking to much . I am just going to swap them out then rebuild the motor and tranny to get the 96 going again . I hate letting it sit but the 99 is an ext cab and the 96 isnt . The older one is my off road toy I need the 99 to haul the family when we take the camper to the lake.

Take a look at the rear brake line where it goes by the gas tank. They are notorious for rusting out and breaking there.
