Tranny knock in reverse and 1-2
sooo I just bought a wonderful 96 1500 5.9L 4x4. trans knocks in reverse and sometimes between 1-2. I have heard of the issues with the 46re. any suggestions on common problems to clue me in.

is it the trans, or the t-case? The NP231 t-case has a snap ring on the rear output shaft that likes to fall off..... and then the parts walk around in the case. Makes some interesting noises.
To check it, drop the rear driveshaft, pull the tailhousing off the t-case (three or four bolts) check and see if the snap ring is still there. Should be on the shaft, right by the bearing. (it will be obvious when you have it apart.)
