Default TransferCase Questions

Ok I have a 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 with a 5.2 with the NV3500 5spd. Under the hood it says for a transfercase it has a NP231DHD, but when I crawled under the pickup the tag says NP241DLD.

Anyway Im needed to replace my Tcase because when I shift it wont lock into any gear. So i was just getting a new one, then I can rebuild or what ever I need to and sell the old one.

Does anyone know if I can put a NP231D in and not have any issues? or What transfercase I can bolt up in there? Or if I need a NP241DLD what can I pull it out of, a 2500(Does Gas or Diesel matter?)
Thank you guys in advance for any advice

As long as the tcase input spline count matches, it will bolt up and work. The only difference I belive is the ld as a 3 gear planetary and the hd has 6.

Have you checked your linkage to make sure it is really shifting the tcase? They are pretty simple gearboxes.

I have crawled under and everything is moving and the linkage is tight. I dont know if it is a shift fork or what it is.
I was just wanting to make sure the 241 wasn't longer or shorter then the 231 and I would have driveline problems.
Would the NP241 have been replaced from a stock one?

I believe for both it would be 23 spline in and 32 out?
Would I have to worry about the size of the speedo Hole?

Is the front driveshaft locking in? Stick it in 4wd, crawl under there, and see if you can turn the front shaft. I am thinkin' maybe you just have a CAD problem.

Someone has changed out your t-case.

Well I stuck a Posi Lok on it because the Vac lines got melted.
Whats happening is when you shift the Transfercase into any gear you cant feel the bump like it grabbed that gear.
It still drives fine but its like it wont shift out of the gear its in, The front axle engages, locks the right side in.

I tried to put the posi-lok in before shifting.
It still wont go into gear, There is no bump into any gear, there is no Transfercase resistance when I pull on the lever
Any Pros or Cons in your guys eyes to putting a NP 231D in the pickup?

is it the trans, or the transfer case that is bad?

Jack up the truck, (all four wheels) with the truck in 4wd, try to turn one of the driveshafts. See what happens.

OK I jacked it up, and the driveshafts turned. But it still didnt go into 4H, N, or 4L, It drives fine, just in 2wd. Nothing changes with the driveshafts when I pull the lever back or push it forward.
I grabbed the shifter on the side of the case, and it moved with no resistance. Could it just not be adjusted right?

You already looked at the linkage, and everything was in place, correct? Got someone to move the lever while you watch what happens? If everything externally is working as it should, but, the front driveshaft isn't locking in, then you do indeed have an internal problem with the t-case.
