Default '01 2500; Timing is off, wont start

2001 2500, 5.9 V8, automatic 518, 241 DHD

So I was burning a lot of oil and ordered the Plenum kit from hughes. The day before it arrived I was coming up my steep icy drive in 4H and the T-case bound up and smapped off the tranny housing. So while I waited for a re-man tranny and a used T-case, I removed the intake and installed the Hughes kit. While I had the intake off I figured I'd replace the Cap and rotor. I pulled the Cap and as predicted both screws were snapped off in the distributor housing. I decide to pull it to try to extract the screws and made the colossal mistake of not marking where the distributor was and the rotor was pointing... ( kick myself in the *** repeatedly!!) Anyway I tried to extract the screws and my extractor snapped off so I couldn't make a clean hole and now the screws for the new cap won't line up. Seeing as I dumped a stupid amount of $ into the truck I decided to go with zip ties to secure the cap instead of ordering a new distributor that wouldve taken 10 days to show up.. (I know, I know, but it's only temporary.)
So I re-assembled the distributor and the intake,,, set the #1 piston to TDC on Compression, pointed the rotor toward #1 and checked all connections,,,, tried to start her and no dice... she backfired once and then just turned over,,, I checked everything again, couldn't figure it out and took it apart and did it again. I reset the distributor a few times, even dropped it in 180 * incase I was on the wrong stroke (which I don't think I was). NO dice...
I decided to move on and removed the old tranny and installed the re-man, T-case and new O2 sensor... I thought everything was all set and tried again to start her but then realized I had not connected the crankcase sensor,,, I tried again and no dice...

My next move is to reset the distributor to as close as I can to the manuel, rotor to #1, #1 piston to TDC, Harmonic balancer to TDC. I unhooked the battery so the computer could reset.... Am I missing something??
It's my understanding that you can only set the fuel injector timing (thru the distributor) and that you can't set the ignition timing without an expensive scan tool...

Looking for any insight from anyone who's had similar problems or experience timing these beasts...

I've established spark, comression, fuel. Does the torque converter have to be set specifically for the crankcase sensor to read properly?
Not sure where to go if my next move fails...
Thanks for any insight!

Grab the 01 service manual from the service manual thread in the faq section. Procedure for initial setup of distributor is in there. There are a selection of marks that need to be lined up. Correctly installed, it should start and run, but, it may not run good...... have to have fuel sync set by someone with a scan tool that can read it.
