vapor canister
my check engine light has been on for a while now and all this time im thinking its a small vacuum leak or a bad o2 sensor. turns out its the evap canister. my mech says that the canister can only be bought from the dealer. anyone else know if that is true. ive looked on rockauto.com and nothing. figured id ask you guys.
also, my mech was gonna charge me 230 dollars just for one hub assembly and i found a 2 hub assemblys and the front trac bar all for under that price for just one. think ill be finding a new mech after this. lol

You can rebuild yours for ~$15 and a bit of time using some fish aquarium charcoal from a pet store. I used Fluval:
You can use a dremel tool or hack saw to slit it all the way around at the bottom, like so:
When you do this, have a garbage can ready as pellets will spew out. In my case the line leading to the purge solenoid was completely corked with pellets. As you can see in the pic below, the foam gaskets were tired and letting pellets pass through the center:
You'll have one at the top and bottom of the canister. I used some foam I had around the house and traced the old ones and made oversized gaskets. Be sure to dump a bit of gas on the foam to make sure it can stand up to the vapors and won't deteriorate.
After that, fill up the canister with the new charcoal, to about this height:
Then stick your top foam gasket in and put the end cap on:
Seal the top back on with silicone or similar. Should work good as new and save a few bucks
