There are vent tubes from the valve covers that hook to the air box, so some oil vapor will be caught by the air filter. Nothing really to worry about.

What Ram_Driver said and to check the plenum, take the whole air assembly off your throttle body and open it up and look and check to see if there is oil pooling up anywhere in there. If there is, then your plenum is going and will worsen, for the most part.

As stated above the plenum check stick a magnet down the throttle body hole and see if it sticks. if it does its the stock plate if it doesn't it's been done.

I don't think it has been done. I'm the 3rd owner of the truck. So woman had it before the guy I bought it from and the guy I bought it from didn't know jacks*** about the trucks. I admit I don't know much but I know more than he did

With your truck having 178000 miles on it, its definitely in need of having the plenum gasket done, and I would recommend that you replace the timing chain also. My 2000 dodge has a 167000 miles on it, and the previous owner didn`t do much to take care of it either, so im in the process of gathering parts to have the plenum done and a bunch of other things that should have been done long ago.

I would clean the box well and replace with a better filter brand like Wix/Napa for better filtration. Then get a new Mopar PCV valve in case it is allowing too much oil by.

That's not really black. When I lived in TX (DFW) I had to replace my 14x3 every oil change because it would actually turn black from the horrible air down there. Kind of freaked me out until I moved away and had the next filter stay white for a year.

I'm probably going to invest in an K&N Cold Air intake.
