Default Scraping noise at highway speeds

I have a 2000 ram 1500 manual transmission and it seems like only slight pressure on the Gas when driving on the highway I hear a scraping or humming noise. The noise only occurs when I let my foot off the gas and then apply slight pressure to the gas again. It almost sounds like the noise comes from the front passenger side of the truck but I keep reading about bad differentials and bearings and such so it has me worried. The mechanic that changed my ball joint assembly also said that my differential sounds bad but I'm not sure what to believe. I originally thought it might have been something rubbing against the drum or rotor or something but I'm not much of a mechanic. Just want to explore my options before I spend $700.

If it is throttle sensitive in 2wd, likely it isn't anything in the front drivetrain. Will it do the same thing if you are in 4th gear?

I think you're pretty on point with the 3rd gear because it never happens when I drive city miles which mostly tops out at 3rd gear. So Yea 4th gear is when the noise starts, and like I mentioned I only hear it on the hiway when I hit the gas slightly. If I punch it on the Gas then the noise goes away.

Can you duplicate the noise with the rear on jackstands? (that should be fun.....)

The mechanic lifted it for me when he told me about it and it kinda sounded the Same but wasn't as deep or made as much of a scraping sound like when I drive on the highway

In my personal opinion it sounded like somewhere in the back right wheel, but of course he immediately went straight to suggesting I need a whole new differential/rear end....

Of course. Might be as simple as a dragging brake shoe.

Or as simple as a driveshaft u-joint. I just had mine replaced and it cured a plethora of issues, including: vibrating, humming, clunking, and steering pulsing. Who knew?
