Ham Bone - I thought you had a 241 already swapped in? Maybe in thinking of someone else. Awesome man. I wish I could do a 241 swap but this 231 was free and all the scrap yards want like $700 JUST for a 241 I will still keep an eye out and pick one up for cheap if the opportunity arises.
On the 96 the sensor in the diff would have been the Rear anti-lock sensor. So it has one for speedo (in tcase) and one in the rear diffy for ABS.

98 and up only had the one in the rear diffy, unless it was 4 wheel ABS.

Any rate, did it get rid of your awful noise?

Won't know until tomorrow morning. I still have to put the front driveshaft on. I quit because the mosquitos were terrible. But it shifts through all the 4x4 gears fine and 2wd works fine so those are good signs. I hope this fixed my issue :\

The 94-97 trucks did indeed have the rear wheel speed sensor, but, it's only duty was for ABS purposes. The sensor in the tailshaft housing of the t-case was for speedometer. in 98 (or thereabouts) the sensor in the tailshaft housing was eliminated, and the PCM used the sensor on the rear diff for both speedo, and abs.

Hmm.. Well my old man stole the axle out of it and he plugged his speed sensor into the rear diff and his speedo works in his 98. I guess that's because of PCM? Either way, doesn't matter.

Not quite yet lol. Wanna break in the transfer case first I'm so happy though.. This problem that has haunted me for 8 months is gone. Now I can use my 4x4 in the winter for safety and everywhere else when I need it.

So for future reference for anyone replacing their transfer case.. I can confirm that you can use an early model 231 (94-97) in a later model 2nd gen (98-01). To use your old shifter you have to swap out the linkages (only 1 bolt) that bolts to the case. The shift pattern however will be the same as the 96. You may be able to use the 96 shifter but it may involve some work to fit it, I'm not sure.
