Default 2001 5.2L Rough Idle/ Surging

My 2001 ram 1500 ( 115,000 kms) has been idling rough and surging at highway speeds recently. It has had a rough idle (RPM's rise and fall constantly) since about October. The surging at highway speed started about a month a go. At first the RPM's would surge for a moment and return back to normal when driving at a certain speed with the cruise control on. Now it surges whenever the cruise control is engaged, but is more noticeable at higher speeds. Any ideas what might be causing this? Could this be the TPS? I also had some fuel issues when it was around -30C (ice in the fuel lines) Could this also be related?

Most likely a failing TPS. When mine went, it was doing 200-300 rpm surges, cruising and at idle. No CEL either.

That sounds exactly what mine has been doing. I had thought it was the TPS but wanted to get some more input before i drove into town to pick one up. Thanks for the help!

A rough idle, aside from the surging, may be other issues,ie tuneup. Remember to disconnect the negative cable on your battery when replacing any sensors. A dealer provided part would be ideal, quality wise, but that's your call.

Changed the TPS today and the truck is running better than ever. Starts up better, no surging at idle or on cruise. Even seems more responsive. Thanks for all the help there ReadRam.

Glad it worked out good for you. Is that an aftermarket billet grill as opposed to the honeycomb style most trucks have?
