power steering
I have a 2000 Ram 3500 Cummins, I had the power steering pump go out, so I replaced it, did a seal kit in the vacuum pump and changed the fluid in the PS.
I now have limited power steering and a howl in the steering and when I apply the brakes. Any suggestions??? could I have gotten a defective pump? have something hooked up backwards? air in the lines? I have done limited driving with it since the work and nothing has changed.
Thanks for your help,
David

At the top of the page is the FAQ, DIY & How to section. You can find the service & parts manual threads in there. But here is a link to the service manual thread.

One way I always used to bleed air out of a power steering system is to jack the front end so the tires are off the ground. Then turn the key to unlock the steering wheel but DONOT start the engine. Now turn the steering wheel lock to lock 10 times and then let it sit for 5-10 minutes. Do this 2-3 times before you try to start the engine. Now because you have hydroboost brakes you will also want to step on the brake pedal off and on as you are turning the steering wheel lock to lock. See if that help you get all the air out.

i just had the same basic issue with my 4bt build, the only way i could clear it was to fill it while it was running, it was full everytime with the engine off, but after starting and cranking the wheels to full lock a few times, it took almost 2 full resivore fills, and has been fine ever since
