I have a 2001 dodge ram reg cab 2wd w/5.9l. I currently have 3.55 gears in the rearend w/limited slip. I am wanting to change this to 4.10 gears(or is dodge 4.11?) and make the rear end posi-trac. How much am I looking to spend on parts and can I do this myself?
I know the speedometer will have to be recalibrated. Anyone done this before and have some advice and prices? -Tyler

I put 4.10's in my Ram with an Auburn limited slip. I really like it so far though i wish I had done 4.27 or 4.56 gears instead. What size tire are you running?
Dealer can recalobrate you speedo for about $40, or you can use a programmer.
Mine priced out to about $1800 for the entier job (gears and limited slip), but I know the guy who owns the shop, so I got a deal. Mine is also a 4 wheel drive, so I had to do gears in both diffs. Since yours is a 2wd, it will cost much less. I bet you could get it done for about $500-$600
I would not do it yourself unless you have experience with it.

I have a friend that I work with who's dad is a 5-star dodge mechanic that works at a dealership. He also has a shop that he owns and works at after hours and on weekends for extra money. He has a set of 4.10 gears and says that he will install them and make the rearend posi-trac for $300. This includes him also keeping my 3.55 gears. Is this a good deal or can I do better? -Tyler

My Auburn limited slip cost about $300 just for it, so I would say if you can get a posi and gear change for $300, that sounds pretty good.
What brand of gears are they?
What brand of posi?
4.10 will be a lot of gear for that tire size. That is a 29.5" diameter tire. I run 4.10's with my 33" tires.

How good did your new limited slip work off -road as far as making both wheels spin at the same time? With 35's would you recommend 4:56's? And how much higher would that make my rpm's go, they are really low now because of the tires. I can cruise at 80 at 1900 rpms.

I would definelty recommend at least 4.56 with 35's. They would put you back in the power band for sure. Here is a chart I have found pretty reliable:

There is another one that can calculate your rpm's at various speeds with various gears and tire sizes, but I can't remember it. steve00ram360 posted it once for me.

you must mean this one... http://www.differentials.com/calc.html these guys did my front and rear with 4.11's for $1450 which included a stock posi unit in the rear (Auburns were on backorder [:@] ) and they rock! [sm=icon_rock.gif]
for 300 bux, posi, 4.11's installed...? cant go wrong. question is... is it done yet? [sm=icon_stickpoke.gif]

Posi is limited slip, so you've already got it. I'm not sure on your axle, but iirc on a Dana 60 the split is 4.10 and down for one carrier, anything larger on a different carrier, which means all he's doing is swapping the ring and pinion onto your current stuff. For $300, if he does the setup right and throws in new seals and bearings, that's a decent deal.
