I have a 1998 dodge ram 1500 sport that I want to make a cummins diesel. I fix/do everything on my own and have a pretty good knowledge about trucks so I am pretty sure I will have no trouble doing this I just don't know what I need to get. Thanks

 

A donor vehicle would be great start.

What engine do you plan to use? If you plan t keep it 1/2 ton the 4bt is your best bet. If you want a 6bt you will need to upgrade to 3/ 4 ton suspension.

I would drop a 4bt in it and be done. The nice thing about a cummins b series is that you can use almost any transmission. If you want to use a cyrsler auto like the 46re you need a way to control it or swap to a rh. I plan to swap to a ford sourced zf 5 speed and np205 trasnsfercase.

For a 6BT, youd need to upgrade everything suspension to 3/4 ton stuff, or youll just end up shredding the truck. The front and rear axles will just shred with a cummins powering them. Same with the trans and x-case.

Thats assuming you're a 4x4, 2wd much easier.

I don't think you need to have the same year.
There are design changes thruout the years for the B series cummin's. That may determine what year you want to use.
