Default transmission overdrive

I have a 2001 dodge ram 1500. it won't shift into overdrive. I put in a new overdrive/lockout solenoid but no change. I replaced the filter and changed the fluid. I didn't see any metal in the pan. It shifts just fine in the rest of the gears. Any ideas?
Thanks for you help.

Welcome to DF!

Is your O/D off lite on? Does it work? Getting a check engine lite? Any codes? Do the first three gears work fine? What size shoes do you wear?

I think shoe size is the most helpful part of your response.

there is a button on the gearshift that turns the o/d off and on. When I push it the light comes on and reads "o/d off." When I push it again the light goes out. I assume that means the o/d is on.
The RPMs at 60 MPH are around 2500.

Ok, so, overdrive really isn't working, and the button is. I am surprised the PCM isn't whining about no RPM drop when it commands overdrive.... that is strange.

With the engine running, check and see if you get power thru the O/D solenoid. Should be the brown wire on connector 2 (middle one) at the PCM, pin 21. (this needs to stay plugged in.... just back probe the wire however you can....) Should see 12 volts there, with engine running, trans in park.

could it be the speed sensor on the overdrive unit? or would I get a code if that was bad?
