what does the unit on the tcase with the 3 wire connector do? can i switch the rear housing?

Where is it on the t-case? if it is back on the tailhousing, thats the vehicle speed sensor for 97 and earlier trucks. Anywhere else, and I don't have any idea, not aware of any other sensors there. Is it wires, or vacuum lines?

yes its the speed sensor. can i switch tailhousings?

I don't think the newer t-case will have the gear on the output shaft to run the VSS...... You can pull it, and see..... but, don't hold your breath.

do i need to split the case and switch the output shaft also? the 231d is out of a 98 i think

Best thing to do would be to pull the tailhousing, and check..... also, I am unsure if there were any changes to that shaft from one version, to the next.... it might just swap right out, on the other hand.... it may not. Part numbers will be different in any event... as one has the provision for the VSS, and the other does not. (probably...)

the tcase isnt the problem so im freshening it up and putting it back in. im going to put another trans in. is there any differences between a 5 speed from my 94 and a 2001?

Maybe the electrical connector, but, that's it. (reverse switch)
