Default np231 H to a np 231 HD swap

It's been quite some time since I have been on this site but hope I am in the right area to post this. My 2001 1500 Ram w/a 318 automatic has a NP231 transfer case on it that has been acting up. I have a chance to grab a used NP231 HD model from a 2001 2500 w/a 360. It is a NP231 HD model and appears to have a different size output shaft than mine. It also doesn't appear as thought I could swap out the tail piece as it has a different bolt pattern / different housing all together. Can anyone confirm as I suspect, it is more trouble than it is worth to try and get the HD model to work?

I had thought just the input shafts were different between the gas engines, and the V-10/diesel variants..... I can't find ANY information on what output shaft sizes were used......

Coming out of a 2500, are you sure it's a 231 and not a 241? I'm probably wrong here, but I don't think 2500's came with a 231.

On another note, If you can get the slip yoke off of the drive line that goes with the donor transfer case you can get an adapter- type u joint to compensate for any difference in sizes. This is all assuming the cases are the same length, and the input shafts match.

You are talking about a 241ld. And it should bolt in with no problems.

I just did this.

Ham Bone. Your right, I went back & double checked it. It is a 241 HD so I bought it for only $75 but as I suspected, I got it home & the output shaft is larger than the 231 model. The standard 241 model probably would have worked out fine but not the 241 HD. I am going back to the yard tomorrow in hopes of finding a 2500 that I can steal the drive shaft off of. Then I bet I will need to swap the mate to my rear diff next with my luck. Oh well, by the time I am done, it will definitely be a lot beefier.

You can get a hybrid U-joint to go between the 2500 driveshaft, and the 1/2 ton rear axle. Take a look and see what you are going to have to do for the front driveshaft as well.....

Hmmmm a 241hd is different from a 241ld. Obviously lol.

You "should" be fine with the front drive shaft. I think the u joints are all the same on the front ds. Either way the way it bolts up is the same so you could just use the 1500 shaft.

What trans was in the 2500?

All you really need is the trans side yoke off a 2500 ds with the hd model. So a diesel or Maybe a v8 manual. Spline counts are different I think. Then use the conversion u joint.

What manufacturer of hybrid U-joints do you recommend? Fort Wayne Clutch is the first one I found on the web.
