'98 is kind of a mongrel year... there where changes part way through the year, that would typically be saved for a new year model... but some of these changed again by the '99 release.

A lot was being driven by nascar truck... as an example, the step down in the grill was to get more airflow through the radiator, as the '98 style was too restrictive and causing overheat problems.

You have the early Sport like I do, from 1998. It's not really a sport except for body color metal instead of chrome, and we have the single headlights. In 1999, they changed the front bumper to a complicated plastic over metal which widened the foglights in the bumper, and gave way to dual headlights. The problem is that it's called a Sport when really, based on changes to later years, it isn't.

I have no need for a brush guard but I suspect that it'll fit your 1998 Sport the same way it would fit a 1998 non Sport.

This my 2001 Ram Sport.
As you can see, mine doesnt have the big "Sport" Decals on the hood like the others, just a small badge on the pillar behind each door.
The only other ones I saw like this were on the dealership lot the day I bought it new.
Is this a rare variation of the Sport package?

OK, maybe somebody already mentioned this, but it looks as though you have the sport bumper, but are missing the plastic? The reason it is all metal is because it is a bumper reenforcement. I hit a deer the other day and that sucker barely moved, but that is about how it looks when plastic is taken off. Don't you think that you bumper seems to have a few to many holes where something should go...

His truck is a 98, so, it still looks the same as the 'standard' bumper. In late 98/99 model year, the sport bumper was dramatically different. Before those, the ONLY difference was the Sport bumper was painted body color.
