Default Best Front Axle U Joints For 2001 Off Road Edition?

Hey guys, it looks like I need to replace the front axle/wheel u joints on the 01 off road edition I just purchased.

Are the U joints different on the ORE's?
What is the part number for OEM? Dana/Spicer correct?
Is Moog better or worse than OEM in this instance?

Thanks guys,
Skeptic

They should be a standard 297/760 u-joint. Spicer use to be about the best but it all depends on what you are going to do with the truck. If it is just going to be a daily drive then you can use the Spicer or get some of the newer designed u-joints that have come out. The biggest thing to remember is to get one that has grease zerks on it as the sealed from factory non-greaseable ones are JUNK!!

I've heard mixed opinions on the different forums. Some are all about the spicer units(non-greasable) and others are all about greasable joints(which I also understand).

So far the brands that I see on rock auto are
Acdelco
Moog
Dana/Spicer
GMB

Truck is mainly a DD
Thanks guys

I've ran the dana/spicer ones. Replaced Fall 2011. 35s and 37s with fair amount of wheeling. I prefer the NON-grease versions. This is my 2000 ORE as shown in sig picture.

I get the Spicer 5-760x non greasable. They are forged and stronger than the greasables. They are very strong, and have survived a couple broken shafts.

So just for fun, I'm checking back in 4 years later, and one of the Spicer 5-760x joints has already failed. Going with greasable moog this time around.

What failed on them? Pictures would be cool... I just replaced one on my 2000 Dana 60, with a spicer non-greasable - I added some grease when I assembled the caps, and the caps REALLY seemed to seal up well...

Not all spicers u joint's are the same. You want to get the spicer life SPL series!!! They have a 3 lip seal that keeps in the grease and keeps out dirt and water. The #1 thing that will kill a u joint. I replaced my u joints when i first got my truck at 60K. About a year later the precision(pos) joints failed and replaced them with the spicer SPL greasable ones. I have 205K now and no issues at all with them! I have a 2500 so if you are using 35+ tires on a dana 44 you probably wont get that much out of them.

It's all in how they're assembled/installed. I had one mechanic put them in and they only lasted four years. Another shop did them and they are going on 7 years. The only brand better than Spicer is CTM or whatever they're called. Parts brands are what is junk.

The ones I put in my Dana 60 were Spicer SPL55-3X. I remember thinking when I put on the caps, wow this thing seals up tight.
