I know of DOT 3 and DOT 5 (which is a synthetic that will not absorb water) brake fluids.

I also know that DOT 3 can NOT be mixed with DOT 5.

I used DOT 5 in a couple military trucks, as that is what is called for and what was used in them to start with. I believe that some (or maybe many) motorcycles use DOT 5.

What exactly is DOT 4?

Can it be used in a DOT 3 System? (I assume it can from your statement)

Can it be mixed with DOT 3 fluid? As in if you drain a system, the traces of DOT 3 fluid that would be left coating the inside of the lines and cylinders and such?

And what in your opinion makes it better than DOT 3?

DOT4 can be mixed with DOT3. I use DOT4 as it has a higher boiling point than DOT3.
