new noise, after eaton truetrac installed. nervous..
So i got the eaton True trac put in by a rear end shop, it runs great works great, but after a few miles of driving it i started hearing a new noise. basically to me it sounds like gear whining possibly. It starts to do it at 40mphthan slowly gets quieter as i get up to 60mph until i can't hear it anymore. if at 40, its loudest, i let off the accelerator it goes away. when i decelerate braking or no braking it comes back at 20mph to 0mph. I can not tell where it is coming from, front or rear. Is it possible that the shop f***** up something? i can't see how seeing as how you just do the side adjusters and then the front c style clamps. its not like they didn't shim it right because there are no shims. they said my ring and pinion were good, had one minor rough spot that they touched up, blew out the tubes to get all the metal out, i checked fluid level which is perfect. Any ideas?
just took it back to the shop, he said its not the pinion depth because that wasn't removed when replacing carrier. he called my 15 min after i left and told me its all bearings bad and should do ring gear and pinion as well. im pissed because when he had it apart doing the eaton he told me bearings were fine and so were my teeth on ring and pinion.
This was a carrier change right? That always warrants new bearings. To put your used bearings on is bad practice. He should have warned you up front about this risk. Bearings wear together. If there was only r&p change then bearings with inspection can be reused.
This should be a complete redo, especially if he says new r&p.
Reads as a botched job to me. I would never assume pinion depth stays the same with carrier change.

as in new carrier as well? im having him do bearings and ring and pinion. Have to work out $$ though since he told me i didn't need bearings. i was willing to do bearings r&p at the same time. now im getting double charged on labor for his incompetence.

Carrier should be fine. Given the short amount of time you had the truck on the road after the work was done, and now he is saying bearings are bad, HE should be the one paying the labor. I could see billing you for the parts, but, this is HIS screw up, not yours.
