Default 46re speed speed sensor?

Hey guys. I'm writing this as I'm burning brush piles in a field so bear with me as I'm trying to not start a forest fire. My 98 Ram has around 190,000 miles. Motor is still going strong. But I've been through 4 trannys. Yes FOUR. Everything seems good but I have a feeling a sensor went out. Recently the truck does not like to upshift to 1st gear at stop (say a redlight) but I can manually shift it to 1st and 2nd no problems. I've also noticed my speedo has a bit of a delay. When I'm driving you can see the speedo go from 5...10...then if I get on it, stays at 10 then jumps up to my actual speed. Any ideas if it's the Speed sensor? I have a code reader at home but I'm not sure it would even throw a code. Ideas? Thanks.

-Justin

Speedo gets its cue from the rear wheel speed sensor on top of the rear diff. Not sure if that is your problem though, sounds more like just a sticking needle..... (not sure what can be done about that....)

When is the last time the filter in the trans was changed?

Check fluid level again. (have to check in neutral, park will give an artificially high reading)

Did you also adjust the bands?

Fuild is still in 'safe' I didn't adjust the bands. I haven't had this particular tranny for more than 4000 miles of at most. So I didn't think it would need it.

Replacing the rear wheel speed sensor is pretty easy, and not hideously expensive..... it *might* deal with your issues, but, I wouldn't bet heavily on that.

any ideas on the lack of 1st gear at stop? It upshifts if i hammer the gas. But not on its own.

Its *possible* the PCM doesn't think you have stopped yet...... if the speedo is still reading 5mph or so..... aside from that, I am not sure what else would cause it..... you have already replaced the important sensors in the trans....
