Default Tranny from a 5.2 fit a 5.9 truck

Hey I'm looking at this 46re from a 98 dodge ram 1500 5.2l will it work in my 2001 dodge ram 2500 with the 5.9(gas) it has a 46re as well.

I'm asking cause I thought I heard somewhere that it won't

It will bolt right up, and everything will plug right in, BUT.... (and you just knew that was coming....) the internal electronics are different..... Change the governor pressure sensor, and solenoid, and the TCC/Overdrive solenoids, and you are golden. If the parts in your current trans are still working, and the problem with that one lies elsewhere, you can just transfer them over. (clean 'em good) I think you need a couple parts from the valve body so the governor parts mount correctly though.

I *think* that will work just fine. I would check with some trans company though, as there is still some question as to the torque converters. I hear rumors that balance moved from the t/c, to the flexplate in 96..... but, I also see different part numbers for torque converters from 5.2 to 5.9 as well. There is a chance that the bolt patterns on the converter are NOT the same.....

Well I found about 98 dodge ram 1500 4x4 with a 360 with 102,000 just a few mins ago on craigslist that has a bad rear end the guys parting out. it has the same motor as my 2001 so it's make sense the tranny is the same as what's in my rig right? I can buy it tomorrow so I'm trying to get the answer before I buy a tranny

Electronics will be different, but, aside from that, will work fine. (need to swap the solenoids/sensors.)

Nope. 94-95 have the 46RH, 96-01 (or 02 3/4 or 1 ton...) have the 46RE, just some electronics change in 2000. According to the pinouts, it should hook right up, and just work, but, in the real world, it doesn't happen that way. Things are apparently "just different enough" that the trans doesn't work quite right.
