Cool Tailgate Handle Stuck

I don't frequently use (open/close) the tailgate on my truck, and as a result the handle must have got seived up....

I opened my tailgate to put it down and now the handle is stuck in the "release/open" position, so when I shut the tailgate, no matter how hard I slam it shut or how much WD-40 I spray on the end latches, it won't lock in the closed position.

Seems as if the inside parts on the handle is where it's all gunked and seized up, not at the end ears/latches...

So, my question is:

Is there a way to open the tailgate to access the handle mechanism to clean it and/or replace the handle itself and NOT have to replace the whole tailgate itself as a whole...

~Thanks!

WD40 won't do squat. You need something like PB Blaster, something that actually eats the rust.....

The handle is replaceable.... Not sure just offhand how it comes out though....

Get the service manual it will show you how to take the tailgate handle off

The plastic bezel around the handle just pops off. Get a small screwdriver or knife or something and just pry it out.

I sprayed some lithium grease in there to lube it up. Mine wasn't completely seized though.

i had the same problem. Take the bezel out and you will see how the rods for each side come to the handle. Its an extremely simple design, but the problem is its a Dodge Ram, it rusts. The rods drag against the plate used for the main handle. I coated mine with grease - real grease. Been working for over a year no w with no issues.

i cut a rectangle around the back of the tailgate and fixed my stuck latch. welded it all back together. looks great after i put bed liner over it. cant even tell. tailgate works perfect.
