That's what I'm here for, I don't know. I have just about zero automotive experience, so I'm looking to learn and get help for this stuff.

That's always fun. Learning is good.

When it won't start, pull one of the spark plugs. (just pick one that is easy to get to.) Hook the wire back up, and put it someplace where it gets a good ground. (DO NOT hold it with your hand.... you won't like the experience....) Have someone else crank the engine, while you watch the plug. See if you are getting spark. (do not run the engine this way very long, if it starts. Tad bit hazardous. )

I'll get to it as soon as I can. It's snowing now so hopefully I'll be able to get to it before next week. Is there any certain distance I should hold the plug from the body? Assuming the body is a decent enough ground?

Body won't work. Ground it against the engine some where. It has to be touching to complete the circuit.
