I have a 2000 Dodge Ram Laramie w/ext. cab, it has the 5.2 liter V8 and is rwd. I'm wanting to figure out if there is a TRUE awd set up or conversion kit (not a 4X4 set up) that would work for my truck. I'm hoping that one of Dodges other vehicles with this set up will bolt up to my truck, with minimal complications. Any help on this is greatly appreciated.

 

You mean all wheel drive all the time? Like a Subaru? So you don't have to pull a lever or turn a **** to engage 4x4? Not sure that has ever been done or is even possible on a 15 year old platform other than finding an awd chassis and transplanting the truck body on it. Maybe someone else can chime in.

 

Wouldn't that be like running 4x4 high all the time? Wouldn't that be bad on dry pavement?

 

Not if you have the right t case. A guy did this before.

He uses a np242 or whatever out of a Durango that was a full time t case.

If I recall correctly he had to make minimal modificactions.


My bud has an 05 that is AWD.

Idk how much different that t case is tho.

 

Use an NP242 transfer case, it has a full-time 4x4 option. It has a center differential, so it can be used on any road surface, put LSD's front and rear, and you have a pretty good imitation of the AWD.

 

So 2wd into all wheel drive. What to say.............go buy a newer truck that has this opt. If you had a 4wd then yes the 242 could be used.

Edit; The newer Rams use an Borg warner xcase 44-45 or something like that, most don't like them at all from what I have read.

 

Yeah. He's 2wd. So a lot more involved than swapping transfer cases.

 

If I was to even consider doing this I would be looking hard at using 4th gen 1500 4wd front end parts, keep it ifs. Either way its a huge job.

 

Buy a 4x4 truck , sell the 2wd . Save thousands , instant results .

 

Yes my truck is currently 2wd. I absolutely do not want any form of a 4X4 setup on it. A TRUE AWD system is capable of running 100% of the time without major complications. IE: Mitsubishi Lancer EVOs, Subaru Imprezas. A true AWD setup is typically found on cars, however: Chevrolet had a true AWD system as an option on the original Chevy Silverado SS.
