Default 46RE transmission fluid

99 ram 1500 4x4
Im replacing the pan. About 6 months ago i changed the fluid filter and gasket. Ive noticed it leaking out of pinholes from the bottom of the pan recently, its rusted out. I know it takes atf+4, are certain brands better than others? Should I use any kind of additive such as trans-x?

Use any ATF+4. It can't be advertised as ATF+4 unless it meets Ma Chrysler's specs. Don't add magic chemicals unless you're a highly specialized chemical engineer who understands what those additives will do. You don't just shove things in your mouth and swallow them because the package is purty, do ya?

As for capacity, it all depends upon how much falls out. It might be four quarts, might be five, might be eight. Pour in what it takes to get the dipstick happy, unless in your case the dipstick is the drunk *** hillbilly neighbor from across the street in which case pour beer into him until he shuts up and then pay attention to your transmission.

Be sure to check it several times after changing it.

come back after a nice long drive and you may discover you need to add more!

I live out in the middle nowhere, at least 15 miles from the parts store. Im trying to avoid multiple trips just to return unused atf. I think I read 11.4 quarts for initial fill. Is that right for my job? I will not be reusing the old fluid.
And I have been known to eat things just because they look good.

"Initial fill" assumes starting off with a completely empty trans. You won't get there by just dropping the pan. I would have six quarts on hand, just to be sure you had enough. The amount that it takes after a filter change varies quite a bit, just from member to member here.

I'd rather make multiple trips to take ATF back then have to make multiple trips to buy more because I didn't have enough.

If you live in the middle of no where you should keep some for future use. What happens if you have a leak and don't have any to add to get the parts store?
