Default 5.9L Magnum Engine tap right before each shift

First i want to start by saying that im new to the whole forum world. I read alot of them when searching on google and other things so I hope im going about this the right way. I am a truck technician professionally working on mostly Fords, but I am a Mopar guy at the core. I have a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9L Auto. I bought it as a project and I finally have it on the road. It still has a few issues but the one I'm not sure which direction to go with is this tapping noise I'm hearing right before each shift when the RPM's get alittle higher. I already know i have a ping some times (most likely plenum) but this isnt a ping. to me it sounds like lifters but im not sure if this is common or not. I have searched through alot of threads and havent found really what im looking for, or an answer that i think applies to my truck. If i could get some insight or maybe find out which direction i should go from you guys it would be great. Thanks in advance!

Think I would be tempted to fix the plenum, seafoam the engine a time or two, do a thorough tuneup, and see if the problem didn't magically disappear. Spark knock, and lifter rattle sound surprisingly similar on these.

Welcome to DF!

Do you hear the sound when you rev it in park of is it only under load? Just noticed you are in Telford, PA. A local member! I'm over the bridge on the Jersey side. Just was wondering if the extreme cold we are having has anything to do with it.

I remember when I had my 98 Dakota with a 318 I would put 93 octane in when I would get a ping and it would go away for a little while before I had the oppourtunity to fix it. So I filled the tank with Premium and drove it around for a little while and it seemed to quiet it down an awful lot. I was extremely surprised because it sounded like a definite mechanical engine tap/knock. I heard the pinging before and it has never sounded the way that noise sounded to me but Im glad it seemed to clear it up for now. Well I guess its on the the old engine reseal. Im probably just gonna go for the gold and put every gasket on it, I know my front cover is leaking also. Thank you again for the replies and helping me out!!
