Default dodge ram won't start

I went to look at a 98 Ram tonight. The seller said he drove it, shut it off, then it wouldn't start. He used 2 battery packs and was able to get it started for about 2 minutes while gassing it. Then it shut off and he wasn't able to start it again. I tried my battery pack on it but it didn't start. I'm wondering if I should take a chance on it for a very good price. What's the worse it could be? Oh yeah, the oil seemed very black but very thin also -- not thick like I'd expect it in this 25 degree weather. What could cause that?

Smell the oil. Smell like gas? If the engine sounded good for the little bit that it ran, and didn't make any rude noises. Buy it, tow it to where you can work on it.

I did not hear it run, he told me he got it going. But when I put my battery pack on the truck it would just click?

For 400 bucks, just buy it. Even if you have to rebuild the whole motor, it will still be worth more than you have in it. 2 or 4 wheel drive?

220K miles? Body in excellent shape? 1500 to 4000, depending on where you are. If its not too far, and you don't want it, I will take it.
