Default Please help!! rough running, with temp guage issues

Hi,
Guys I would appreciate any help you can give me. I recently purchased a 98 2500 v10 4x4 from a friend of my sons that was in financial trouble. I have been without a vehicle for over a year since my truck was stolen and totaled. I knew the truck had some issues but it was all I could afford.

The truck runs very rough and after being driven just a short ways it will start running even rougher and will die when the accelerator is let off. The farther I drive, the worse it gets. It will stay running as long as I keep it revved up. otherwise is idles very low and dies. Also my Temperature gauge was not working, and the thermostat was missing out of the truck. I replaced the thermostat and temperature sensor, and the heater started working great.

The Temp gauge was still not working so I started checking things and turned the plug around on the sensor (orange with black striped wire on the only post in the sensor) and it started working. I then drove a couple blocks and it immediately showed that the truck was overheating. however the heater hadn't even started blowing hot air, and the radiator hoses were barely warm. But nothing changed in how it was running. When I start the truck from a cold start I also can hear water run into the heater core also, but no leaks. The only code I am getting is a P0118.

The truck is in excellent shape and only has 116000 on it. I tried unplugging the O2 sensors and it made no difference. I also saw that the cats have been cut off and two glass packs put on in a dual exhaust setup with no tailpipe. Its loud as hell and sounds like a pissed off bumblebee. I have two cats and a muffler in route to try and fix that situation. I also have a lot of rocker clatter, and the heads were just rebuilt by a very reputable local shop, that builds for some very well known people, so I know they were done right. I am also smelling a lot of fuel out of the exhaust after driving it.

Any ideas? I would greatly appreciate the help. Thanks in advance.....

98 should have a two pin temp sensor. Since the PCM isn't being clued in to correct engine temp, it doesn't know how much fuel the engine actually needs.... Fix that first, and see what happens.

I replaced the sensor with the correct sensor and it cleared the codes. Its running much better but it is still idling really low and i still hear alot of rocker noise. Also now my speedometer isnt working unil it hits 25mph. And my antilock brake light is on. The CEL is off though. It sill seems slightly rough though. Im giing to clean the throttlebody and The attached sensors and see if that helps

If you have rocker clatter and you know where the heads were done go there and ask them what they think. It could be as simple as a loose rocker arm or two causing the running issue and the noise. Or if you're able, pull the valve cover on the loudest side and check for yourself, but I'd go back to the shop, if they are reputable I doubt they would charge to take a quick look after recent doing work on it.

Did you reset the PCM when you changed the sensor? If not, try that first.

For the speedo/ABS lite, change the rear wheel speed sensor on the rear diff. Should solve it.

Is it running on all ten?

There are two speed sensors. One on the trans for the speedo and one on the rear for abs. There is an abs fault but changing the sensor on the rear may not be the problem. Need to see what the fault is. Try resetting the pcm and see what happens.

On the 98 and up trucks, speedo gets it's info from the RWSS. Speedo issues, with the ABS/Brake lites on as well, are classic symptoms.

Well I replaced the rear diff sensor and it fixed the speedo problem and now I have a p0152 code. Which from using the search function I see is a O2 sensor problem. Bank 2 sensor 1. Which is a pre cat sensor on the #1 cylinder side. ( see I did use the search. Lol) but I unplugged the sensors like so many have done and no difference. It's running 100% better but still a little rough. I have not bought the cat coverts yet but did get a proper muffler on it. I got a great deal on a Walker 2.5 dual inlet single 3" out muffler. Brand new old stock for 39.95. It's really quiet now. I love the performance sound, but it makes it harder to sneak around when hunting. Lol

Would the cats being gone make a diffrence? I'm also finding half of what the kid told me about the truck was a flat out lie. Grrrrrrr
