Default Computer questions

I'm replacing the pcm on my 99 1500 4wd with the 5.2, I've been looking and some of them talk about updated emissions. My cat is gutted so I was wondering if there's a different computer I need to get. I also saw something about one having Mexico emissions and one having federal emission updates. I don't know anything about these computers so I was just wondering what to get. If anybody has websites or links that would be great. Thanks!

Go to the parts store, and simply order one for your truck. You will need to have you VIN as well. Then its just a direct swap.

Reason your need your vin is, PCM needs to VIN match your truck, else things like SRS, and ABS whine about it.

If I do that do I have to get it programmed at the dealer? Like for the mileage and stuff.

Not sure..... I don't recall if it's the PCM, or the cluster that remembers mileage. Have that information handy when you order. Just in case.

Shouldn't have to do anything else once you have it hand, aside from install it in the truck.

Cluster is just a display , no memory .

PCM does store mileage but has to be read from a DRB . New one can be programmed to match mileage but not needed as it doesn't effect odometer readings .

BCM stores mileage and supplies signal for the cluster read out . Change the BCM for a used one , you get whatever K was on that truck , on your odometer display .

BCM? I wasn't aware our trucks had one...... or would that be the CTM?

You're right . Most times I can transfer info from the jeep world but , apparently , not in this case . Sorry bout that , I usually double check but was a little too busy yesterday to reference it against the Rams .

CTM has a built in portion to cover the BCM functions on the Ram . It's not clear if the mileage is stored in this or not , I would guess yes . However , this does not supply the mileage to the display from what I read . Apparently , it's the cluster to my surprise . I've read several who have changed the cluster and get the donor trucks mileage on their display . It would be logical to assume it is stored elsewhere , either/both in the PCM &/or CTM .

Why Chrysler had to change these things from these two vehicles is a mystery to me . The powertrains are identical except the starter location , all sensors identical , etc .

Thanks for the correction and making me look into this for better understanding . If you don't learn at least one thing a day , it's a waste of a day .
