Default torque converter locked up???

1998 1500 slt stock

Put the last few bushels of corn to town, left the gravity box at the elevator, ran some errands so never went above 35 mph, had lunch, went back to the elevator to hook up the wagon, shifted into reverse to connect the wagon and it lurched and died.

runs and idles in park or neutral. as soon as put it into gear it lurches and dies, like a manual with a clutch pop. With transfer case in neutral and truck running I can cycle through the gears fine. Pulled it home, put it on the lift and cycled through the gears while running, transfer case in gear and it worked fine.

Is this a stuck torque converter? Is there a bad solenoid? Or????

Possibly bad solenoid, or shorted wiring harness. After everything started working right, did you take it for a test drive?

Where is the solenoid located? No, didn't try driving.

Inside the trans. Gotta drop the pan. TCC, and O/D solenoids are together. Kinda hidden.

Thank you sir! Will source the solenoid, change the filter when the pan is off and start there. Would you suggest changing the O/D solenoid while in there?

Yep. They usually come as a set in any event. According to theory, you don't *have* to drop the valve body to change 'em out..... but, it does make it a tad easier...... (I think it's more about wiring routing than anything else.)

Okay, thinking it might be a plugged oil line. Doing more diagnostics this afternoon. Not the solenoid and still hoping not the TCC.

Nope, not the oil line. pulled the lines, put on a short by pass to avoid the cooler, disconnected the solenoid, and it is still problem. looks like we will have to pull the transmission to get at the TCC to replace hardware.

Unplug the 8-pin connector, about halfway back, on the drivers side of the trans. See if the problem goes away. Keep in mind, you won't have O/D, TCC, or any variety of automatic function...... will have to shift manually.

Yeah, we did that.

We bypassed the oil cooler and oil lines and we unplugged the solenoid (8 pin connector). We dropped it on the ground and moved from neutral to D and she died. Thinking the only thing left is hardware. Any other thoughts?
