I recently purchased a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 and would like to replace the antenna that is missing to improve reception. I purchased an antenna for the vehicle, which appears as though it would just screw down into the mount on the truck. The issue is that the truck currently doesn't have a female connection, and I am not sure why. Did the old antenna break off? What is going on with this? I am leary of just twisting around on the antenna mount, as I do not want to destroy the entire thing. Below is a picture of what I have going on (sorry its a bit grainy, it was almost dark when I took it).
The antenna I purchased was off a same generation Ram. I purchased it at a junk yard, that's what I thought was odd about it. I just unscrewed the one off the Ram at the yard, but it doesn't fit. Maybe someone changed the antenna at some point. Did the antenna attach differently in 1997 vs other years?
God only knows what dodge did with antennas.... they changed enough other minor stuff from year to year, that it wouldn't surprise me if the antennas weren't different.....
See if you can either unscrew the one in the antenna you bought or unscrew the one on your truck. Normally it's just a double threaded stud. Why did you but one that is different if you knew what you needed?
