Default "GEN" light on

I have a 1997 dodge ram 1500 5.2 4x4. I had to pull the transmission pan to replace the filter and seal as it was leaking. I bolted it back up and started to take it for a drive, as I was driving the truck shut off and came to a complete stop. The "GEN" light came on and now it will only crank but I can't get it to fire. I've had the alternator tested and it's a brand new battery. I'm lost and I have no clue where I could start from. Can anybody help me?

You have more than one problem, make it run first. See what's missing, fuel, or spark.

It's definently getting fuel, the voltage meter only runs up to around 12 volts when I turn the key on

That's only reading battery voltage. It won't charge till the PCM thinks the engine is actually running.

Are you getting spark?

i had a gen light issue once upon a time. after hours and hours of looking for what the hell is wrong. i noticed the spark plug wire had become loose enough to be resting against the exhaust manifold. it was grounding out on the manifold. zip tied the wire away and it fired right up. check it out man. hope this helps

If the engine stops all the idiot lights come on not just the gen. Check if you are getting a spark.
