Default HELP! ram 1500 tranny problems?

Truck was fine no lights on, reversed out of my driveway hit the breaks heard like a snap and then a loud grind. Was able to pull back in so it still shifts into drive. Didnt check if reverse was still there because the grind is obnoxiously loud and dont want to cause further problems So even with the truck in park it makes that same grind shut it off turn it back on grind starts as soon as truck does. No signs of leaks. Has this happend to anyone or can anybody give some input on if it sounds like tranny or transfercase..was in 2 wheel so im leaning towards tranny any help/advice will be much appreciated thank you in advance.

Grinding is not a good sign. Time to drop the pan and look for shavings, which I would bet you will find....

Is your transfer case fully in gear?

Before i reversed everything was fine so im guessing it was engaged fully........Ok so was just out there and wanna say its my tranny. Had to reverse in to my spot a little better and notice it didnt engage and then kind of caught but came out again so i couldnt reverse or go forward (this is why i think its the tranny). Also when it grinds it makes a weird smell probably usual when grinding. Also when i put my head under the truck sounds like its from the tranny.

Crab a friend, and a long screwdriver. (a friend that you trust absolutely...... and doesn't have an insurance policy on you.) have the friend start the truck, and put it in gear. You crawl under there, put the handle of the screwdriver against your ear, and the other end against various spots on the trans/t-case. See where it sounds louder. That will be the problem area. At this point, it could still be either, and the damage is already pretty much done.

Chances are good that any friend one might crab would no longer be trustworthy.

I'm kinda fond of my stethoscope. It makes me look as if I might know what the heck I'm doing. To the neighbors, anyway. The truck isn't so easily convinced.

Take the inspection plate off and take a look for anything out of place. It sounds like the pump went. Will need to remove the trans for that.
