Default lots of smoke

Hi I have a 1996 ram 1500 5.2l. The first problem I have is that my truck burns oil pretty quickly. Every time I put in more oil and start it up cold, it puffs out giant clouds of white smoke. It also pops when I try to accelerate but goes fine.

White smoke? That's not oil..... Are you losing coolant?

I was awhile ago but it kind of stopped. We did find a leak in the hose and repaired it but I think it still did it after. But if it's not the oil what causes the burning of it? Everytime I refill the oil it does this the Morning after.

You probably have leaking valve guide seals, which isn't really a surprise, considering the age of the truck. That will give you a buff of blue in the morning......

White smoke is coolant..... or, depending on climate, might simply be condensation boiling off.

Oil consumption is going to be either rings, PCV valve, or plenum. (or leaking.... see any evidence on the ground?)

Ok. Yeah there is occasional drips on the ground. I've thought about replacing PCV anyway.

Get one from the dealer, they are much more likely to be the correct flow rate.

Ok awesome thanks! What about the popping when I accelerate? Will it fix that issue? Or do I need plugs or wires?

Check your plenum. See what that looks like. (see the stickied plenum thread.)
